Synagogue

Today Tyler, Bryn, Jonathan, Danielle and I went to the B'nai Zion Synagogue down off Lee Highway. Ty and Jonathan, being guys, had to wear kippah's. I thought it was a very interesting service, especially because there was a Bat Mitzvah scheduled. Some of the ways these particular conservative Jews worshipped reminded me a lot of how we worship, but there was also a whole bunch of differences. One of the main things I noticed was that all the children stayed in the main service the entire service (which started at 9:45 a.m. and got done at 12:20 p.m.). And they were really good too. The little boy in front of us even said some of the chants and prayers along with the rest of the congregation, and he looked pretty small. I'm not sure if the children always stay in the main service or just did this week because of the Bat Mitzvah, but they were all sure really good at listening to all the readings and chants and prayers. Maybe even better than me.

  1. Did you sit in separate sides of the church? Did you have to cover your heads? It sounds like a fascinating service.
